Cyborg Odds: Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. Julia “The Jewell” Budd
Cris “Cyborg” Justino’s Bellator debut is finally just around the corner. The Brazilian legend will get the chance to become the face of women’s MMA at 145 pounds if she can top champion Julia “The Jewel” Budd on Saturday night.
It’s hard to knock bud, a champion who in this bout feels like an underdog. She has just two losses on her record–one to Ronda Rousey before her historic rise when both had just three bouts on their pro record. Budd’s other loss came to Amanda Nunes, the women currently being called the greatest female MMA fighter ever by many.
Still, Cyborg’s only kryptonite since her first loss in 2005 has been Nunes as well. Setting aside a lone drug test failure, which has plagued Cyborg her entire career despite testing clean ever since, her power can and does put fear in grown men. Her finishing rate is 81% compared to Budd’s 54%.
Cyborg Has the Advantage… Pretty Much Everywhere
Not only does she have that power but we at OddsUSA feel Cyborg has a better strength of schedule. Budd’s other two notable wins include a decision nod over Charmaine Tweet. Cyborg scored a TKO over Tweet in just 46 seconds. Budd won the Bellator title over pioneer Marloes Coenen in a fourth-round finish. Cyborg finished Coenen twice. No one else stands out on Budd’s record.
Cyborg then bounced back from the Nunes loss with a dominant decision victory over Felicia Spencer. Her record also includes fellow pioneer Gina Corano, Shayna Baszler, Tonya Evinger, Holly Holm and more. The Spencer fight may be a sign Cyborg is taking her time, being more tactical, but she is just shy from being back on top.
We have to give credit to Budd as she does have a belt to her name but even looking simply at styles, we still have to go with Cyborg. She prefers to stand and bang while Budd seems to prefer ground and pound. Cyborg’s been taken down before but it’s rare because of her pressure and ability to intimidate.
Even if Budd does get the takedown, Cyborg is like Chuck Liddell in that she does just well enough to make things a stand-up affair almost immediately. This will all come down to Budd’s ability to keep her challenger where she wants.
Budd has three title defenses under her belt, but a new era in Bellator is about to begin.
The Prediction: Cyborg via KO/TKO
