LFA 9—Dennis vs. Marques Recap
The Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) is a leading developmental promotion to the UFC.
Main Event: Myron Dennis vs. Danilo Marques
Dennis, a veteran of The Ultimate Fighter 23 is on his back within the first half-minute against his Brazilian adversary. He works his way out of any trouble and they tie up for some dirty boxing. The strikes are short with Dennis scoring points before a big knee. Marques avoids the leg trip he’d been trying not to give up for the majority of the round.
Dennis forces him to the ground but Marques finds his way into the top position. The BJJ fighter has a shot at a guillotine choke but they box instead. Marques gets the last word with a double-leg and a couple blows from on top before the round ends.
“Light-Skinned Dynamite” knees Marques to start the second frame off his way. It’s soon back to how the first began with Marques on top and trying to look for a rear-naked choke, getting his body locked in a figure-four. The clinching continues as Marques forces the bout back to the canvas.
The two are prodded by the official to keep the action moving and are quickly reset to the standing position. Dennis fires off a knee and takes a jab to give one in the final seconds before the third. Marques is wobbly after a left hand to the midsection but this fight is going to the last round.
The American comes out with leg kicks and a slight jab, forcing the pace but being safe. He points a string of jabs and leg kicks together for late combos as the fans cheer. Marques is evading, moving side to side before he wraps up Dennis again. He does nothing with the clinch and Dennis spins out then pushes away to stand and throw leather.
That plan doesn’t last long as Marques is on Dennis like glue but misses another inside trip. Another separation takes this round beyond the halfway point. Dennis peppers Marques with leg kicks through the final minute, pawing him with left jabs and stuffing one last go for a takedown.
Myron Dennis def. Danilo Marques by Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)
Co-Main Event: Don’Tale Mayes vs. Demoreo Dennis
The elder Dennis brother is the first to throw out a shot then checks an early leg kick. A stiff left hand follows before “Kong” Mayes lands a knee to the body as the pair clinch against the cage. They separate but Dennis backs him against the fence once more after some wild swings. Mayes stuffs a takedown and lands a number of ground n’ pound shots (some possibly to the back of the head.
Dennis suffers through the blows and gets the crowd roaring with a surprise knee bar. Mayes gets out and his opponent is not up and time, now back on defense as a result. Dennis suffers point-strikes and an elbow before the round ends.
Mayes looks a little gassed and wobbles on a body kick attempt to open the middle frame. Dennis shoots in for a single-leg takedown, gets it, and immediately move into side-control. Mayes gets to his feet but Dennis is rabid, right on him again and gets another takedown into side-control but hasn’t done much damage as the round is half over.
Dennis is outweighed by his dance partner and gets rolled onto his back. Mayes cuts him with a blow and then drops more elbows. He is back in full-mount with ease. The official warns him for more punches to the back of the head but he keeps the dominant position through two. Dennis ends the round bloody after an elbow right above his right eye.
The two men trade hands for a second before Dennis finds success with a clinch knee ahead of a takedown. Nothing results and they are once again battling against the steel. The referee forces the combatants to separate. Mayes is clearly ahead on strikes but Dennis is still looking to wrestle.
They’re separated once more.
Mayes is tiring but Dennis isn’t interested in trading hands as he goes for a double-leg this time. He takes some elbows to the ribs but gets the takedown with Mayes trying to then set him up for a triangle as the fight is down to the last minute. Mayes hangs on to be stood up. He then looks for a throw but settles for landing a couple more strikes in the closing seconds.
