Bellator Signs Dillon Danis
Per Yahoo Sports, the jiu-jitsu coach and training partner of UFC lightweight (155-pound) champion “Notorious” Conor McGregor, Dillon Danis, will be making his MMA debut with Bellator MMA. The promotion confirmed the deal with MMAFighting.com.
“I obviously respect what he (McGregor) has accomplished and will accomplish in the future,” Danis said to Yahoo. “He’s incredible and the aura of confidence he has is amazing. He’s a champion for a reason. But I want to go down my own path and do it my way.”
Danis plan is to fight at welterweight (170 pounds) but lightweight remains a possibility. Details for his debut are yet to come. He initially hinted at the signing with a tweet over the weekend about a “big fight announcement coming soon” before the news broke.
The New Jersey-born 23-year-old is currently a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the highly respected Marcelo Garcia after beginning training at age 15. According to BJJHeros.com, Danis is 16-9 in jiu-jitsu with 10 victories by submission while he has only been submitted twice. His last victory in the sport came by knee bar (his favorite submission) against Javier Valenciano at Florida’s 2015 Boca Raton Open.
Danis won IBJJF world titles in 2014 in both the Gi and No-Gi categories at the brown belt level.
