Jedrzejczyk to Women’s Flyweight Division?
The UFC held its UFC 200 media conference call yesterday. During the call, Women’s Strawweight (115 lbs.) champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk informed the various outlets of her intention to leave the division in the near future.
Jedrzejczyk debuted in the organization on July 26, 2014 with six victories already to her credit. Following that bout Jedrzejczyk defeated Claudia Gadelha in December by split decision–a choice that is considered questionable by many. With just two wins as a part of the promotion, Jedrzejczyk next took the 115-pound title from inaugural champion Carla Esparza.
Although she has only defended the belt twice, the champion has said that she wants a Flyweight (125 lbs.) title as well.
“…I want to be the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two different weight classes” Jedrzejczyk said.
She would make UFC history by being the first woman to add that accolade to her list of accomplishments. The only men to do so are UFC Hall of Fame members Randy Couture and B.J. Penn who won the UFC Heavyweight/ Light Heavyweight and Welterweight/ Lightweight titles respectively.
The UFC does not officially have a Women’s Flyweight weight class but gave the division a try with a matchup between Joanne “JoJo” Calderwood and Valerie Letourneau roughly two weeks ago at UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
“I predict that, so I know it’s going to happen,” Jedrzejczyk said. “It was a good fight between Valerie and JoJo, the first catchweight at 125, but I think we need that division. So many girls from bantamweight can go down, so many girls from strawweight division can go up. So we should make that division the next division.”
Following their first fight and continued feud as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 23,the Polish import faces Gadelha in a rematch as the main event the TUF 23 Finale on July 8 with UFC 200 the following night.
“I think it’s going to be the last fight between me and Claudia Gadelha…”We will see. I’ll focus on this fight and I think that I’m definitely going to win this fight” Jedrzejczyk said.
She is currently undefeated at 10-0.
